Do I need to do anything to prepare for my laser hair removal treatment?
You should shave the area that you are getting laser hair removal on prior to your appointment. If you are unable to shave the area, our staff can shave the area for you for a small cost. You should also avoid plucking the area for at least 2 weeks before your appointment, and avoid waxing for 4 weeks before your appointment. Waxing and plucking mess up the growth cycles of the hair and will make it harder to effectively target the hair for laser hair removal. Read more about preparing for a treatment.
What skin types can be treated?
Our Cutera® CoolGlide laser is effective on all skin types, including sun-tanned skin, so you do not need to avoid the sun before your treatment. You may choose to avoid the sun because it may improve your results, but it is not necessary.
Will laser hair removal affect my tattoo?
Yes! The laser works by targeting the melanin in the hair, so it will be extremely attracted to the color in the tattoo. This will cause the skin over the tattoo to heat up and burn very rapidly. If you have a tattoo, it does not mean that you cannot get laser hair removal, you just can’t get the hair directly over your tattoo removed. If you have a tattoo in the same area as you are getting your hair removed, be sure to point it out to our doctors and estheticians. They will cover your tattoo and be very careful to avoid bringing the laser too close to the tattoo. Unlike other clinics and med spas that are careless when in comes to tattoos, you can be sure that our skilled doctors and estheticians at Look Young Atlanta will safeguard your precious artwork.
Will laser hair removal cause cancer?
No, of course not! Laser hair removal uses non-ionizing radiation. This type of radiation produces intense heat but does not cause any sort of cell mutation, which is what causes cancer. Non-ionizing radiation is around us every day. It is the same kind of radiation that is found in visible light, power lines, and cell phones.
Does laser hair removal hurt?
Everyone has a different pain tolerance, but most people do not find laser hair removal painful. The sensation has often been likened to a rubber band snapping on the skin. If you find the treatment painful, we suggest taking an over the counter pain reliever such as Tylenol or Advil prior to your treatment. We can also apply a numbing cream to the treatment area if you need it, but most of our customers don’t feel that this is necessary.
Are there any Laser Hair Removal side effects that I should be aware of?
Most people do not experience any side effects at all, but some people may experience the following potential temporary side effects:
- Itching in the treated area
- Redness for up to 3 days
- Swelling right around the follicle for up to 3 days
- Tingling or feeling of numbness
- In very rare cases you might experience a temporary pigment change (hypopigmentation or hyperpigmentation) lasting a day or two.
Is laser hair removal covered by insurance?
Laser hair removal is considered to be a cosmetic procedure and therefore is not covered by insurance. You will be responsible for the full payment, but we offer many financing options to make the payments easier for you.
How soon will I be able to return to work after my laser hair removal treatment?
Right away! Laser hair removal has very few side effects and even those are very mild and will not impede you from work at all. Many of our patients come in for treatments during their lunch break and return to work immediately after the treatment.
How long should I wait in between sessions?
While most patients receive treatments 4-6 weeks apart, this will largely depend on personal factors such as the thickness of your hair, the density of your hair, and your hair’s natural growth cycle. Our experienced doctors and estheticians will develop a customized treatment plan and schedule that will take these factors in to consideration. It is important that you stick to the treatment schedule we give you in order to optimize your results and catch your hair at the best point in its natural growth cycle. Laser hair removal works best on hair in the active growth phase, but even if you cannot see the hair, it can still be actively growing under your skin and our laser targets those kinds of hair the best.
What kind of results should I expect after each session?
With each session you should see a significant reduction in the amount of hair in the treated area. Laser hair removal works best on hair in the active growing phase, which is why it is important to stick to the treatment schedule our doctors, or estheticians assign you. Most people require around 6 treatments to get optimal result but the results will vary for people with hormonal imbalances.
Who is the best candidate for laser hair removal?
The best candidate for laser hair removal is someone with realistic expectations. Thanks to our state-of-the-art Cutera CoolGlide laser, we are able to treat individuals with almost any skin or hair color, but it is important that you understand that laser hair removal requires multiple treatments appropriately spaced apart.
How long has laser technology been in use?
The laser was first used in medicine in 1961, 50 years ago! Laser hair removal was used experimentally in the late 70’s, and became commercially available in the mid 90’s. The technology has been advancing steadily over the past 8-10 years, and hit a huge breakthrough about 3 years ago with the introduction of the Nd:YAG lasers, such as our Cutera CoolGlide laser.
How old do you have to be to get laser hair removal?
There isn’t really an age limit on laser hair removal, but we would prefer to not treat children younger than 13. Young people are not finished growing and they develop new hair as they continue to grow and as their hormones change. On the flip side, older people usually have white or gray hairs that will not respond well to laser hair removal.
